Tucked away in the cornfields of Iowa you’ll find one of the most unique cities in America, a place that takes ideal living to a new height. Maharishi Vedic City, incorporated in 2001, has structured every aspect of life—including the homes, food and healthcare—to express the Vedic principles brought to light by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, founder of the Transcendental Meditation^® program.

“Veda means knowledge,” says Dr. Kent Boyum, Director of Economic Development for the city. “Everything in the city is designed to use Vedic principles to increase the good fortune of its citizens.”

Vedic Architecture

When you arrive in Maharishi Vedic City, one of the first things you’ll notice is the distinct architecture, with golden roof ornaments poking above the cornfields. Every building is designed according to the principles of Maharishi Sthapatya Veda^® architecture to bring good fortune to its inhabitants. For example, all the buildings face east so the auspicious morning sun falls on the doorway. An open space in the center of each building, called the Brahmasthan, creates a core of silence in the home.

Dee Johnson, together with her husband Chris, developed a 240-acre resort inside the city. “With Maharishi Sthapatya Veda architecture, there’s an accumulation of coherence and silence that work together, removing any resistance to your desires,” she says. “It’s as close to heaven as you can be.”

Vedic Health Care

Maharishi Vedic City is home to one of the nation’s premier health spas, The Raj—Maharishi Ayurveda Health Spa. Set at the end of a grand driveway lined by Bradford pear trees, the 100-acre French Provincial estate also features rose gardens, a lake with swans, and nature trails.

Voted one of five top international spas by Town and Country and Vogue, The Raj enjoys international recognition for authentic and holistic rejuvenation treatments of the Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health^SM.

The goal of the Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health is to prevent disease before it arises by awakening the body’s own inner intelligence. Visitors to The Raj can tour a private treatment suite, where day guests enjoy facials, anti-stress massage, and other Vedic treatments that are part of the Maharishi Rejuvenation^SM program. The Raj also hosts the city’s visitor center and offers a 16-dish organic vegetarian buffet lunch.

Vedic Agriculture

Maharishi Vedic City is the first town in America to ban the sale of non-organic food within its borders. To ensure that the food supply is fresh and organic, the city built its own 1.5-acre greenhouse to grow organic produce year-round for the residents, with the surplus shipped to markets throughout the Midwest. Crops are grown using principles of Maharishi Vedic Agriculture^SM principles, which include Vedic Sound^SM and influences from the sun, moon and stars to improve the quality of the food.

The greenhouse itself is built according to Maharishi Sthapatya Veda principles to utilize the most light and create an orderly feeling. A new 100-acre greenhouse is under construction, and the city’s green agenda is evident in the use of wind and solar energy to power the greenhouse complex.

Vedic Education

Maharishi Vedic City and the surrounding Fairfield area are already home to pioneering Consciousness-Based^SM universities and schools, including Maharishi University of Management, Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment, Maharishi Open University, Maharishi University of Enlightenment, and the Ideal Girls’ School.

Recognizing that the solution to all problems is proper education—education that develops the total brain potential and cosmic creative intelligence of every student—the city also plans to establish Maharishi Vedic University to provide a public university, colleges, and primary and secondary schools for the city’s residents.

Last fall the city also began construction of a separate campus to house 1,000 Vedic Pandits (see main article). This permanent group of peace-creating experts will promote coherent national and world consciousness and thereby prevent any negativity from arising in America or in the family of nations. These Vedic Pandits are helping Maharishi Vedic City to realize its most important goal: to be a “lighthouse of peace” for America and the world.
